about Nainers

Nate Nate Nainers (they/she) is a settler of Scottish and mixed European descent who grew up on Katzie and Kwantlen unceded territories (Maple Ridge, BC), and currently lives on Kwikwetlem unceded territory (Port Coquitlam, BC).

As a spoken word artist, they were awarded a Professional Development Grant by the Canada Council for the Arts for a twelve month mentorship under award-winning poet, Kevin Spenst, who teaches at SFU and VCC.

Nainers’ book, “It’s Gonna Be Sick As Hell!” (2022), is a collection of absurdist stories centred around building bridges between queer and schizoid experiences and manual labour environments. Their book was launched at the Massy Art Gallery, in so-called Vancouver, BC.

During July 2023 Nainers was artist-in-residence for Hammock Residency where they wrote and illustrated an online story about their experiences in fundamentalist Christian communities that preached rapture theology and the imminence of the Apocalypse.

Nainers engages their community by organizing festivals, initiatives, and events, past and present, such as: Parade of Lost Souls, Food Not Bombs YVR, Wizard Walks, Whoa Whoa Hey Now Cabaret, Myths and Such Storytelling Show, and the League of Fuddy Duddies with Silly Hats.

They studied literature and mythology at the University of British Columbia and the University of the Fraser Valley.
